Job Description
Temporary Hospital Billing Follow-Up Specialist
Job Summary
The Temporary Hospital Billing Follow-Up Specialist is responsible for managing aging accounts, following up on outstanding insurance claims, resolving denials and discrepancies, and ensuring claims comply with payer requirements while maintaining accurate documentation and adherence to compliance standards.
Responsibilities
- Review assigned aging accounts and identify claims requiring follow-up.
- Contact insurance payers (commercial, Medicare, Medicaid, managed care, etc.) via phone, portals, and written correspondence.
- Document payer responses and next steps accurately within the billing system.
- Correct and resubmit denied or rejected claims as needed.
- Research missing information, obtain medical records, or request coding updates when necessary.
- Resolve billing discrepancies and ensure claims meet payer requirements, including handling provider disputes when required.
- Maintain detailed notes of all actions taken in the patient account record.
- Update account statuses and escalate complex issues to management.
- Communicate with internal departments (coding, registration, medical records) to resolve claim-related issues.
- Notify management of any payer trending issues or concerns.
- Meet established productivity and quality standards.
- Follow HIPAA, organizational policies, and billing compliance guidelines.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Experience in medical office billing or hospital revenue cycle with insurance follow-up (typically 3+ years).
- Knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS codes, and standard billing concepts.
- Experience working with billing software and/or EMR systems.
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage multiple accounts and meet deadlines.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Analytical thinking and ability to interpret payer remittances.
- Proficiency with spreadsheets and billing platforms.
Summary Qualification
- Background in hospital or medical office billing with a focus on insurance follow-up.
- Demonstrated ability to resolve claim denials and discrepancies.
- Familiarity with payer requirements and billing compliance guidelines.
- Skilled in documentation, account management, and interdepartmental communication.
- Capable of working efficiently to meet productivity and quality expectations.
